Backpack

The backpack or laptop left in a café

In a café, a library, or on a train, the object stays and you leave. A person who sees it can open your page before it reaches a lost-property desk, if the code is visible.

No passwords

The text says it has an owner and how to reach you. It does not say the password, the PIN, the account, or how the sleeve opens. That does not help anyone return it.

If the backpack belongs to a child, leave off their name, school, and address. A private page lets people write to you without showing those details. The general rule is in what to put on the page.

Where to stick it

On a laptop, a corner of the lid, clear of vents and the latch. On a backpack, an outward pocket that does not scrape the ground. For a travel bag, the suitcase at the airport case moves the spot: a flat side, away from the wheels.

In cafés and coworkings, visible wins

Staff or the person at the next table will not install a tracking app to tell you. If the QR sits visible on the lid, they open it and write at once. Tracking apps help you know where it is; the sticker gets a person to tell you.

On Pro you also get an email when someone scans the page or writes to you, at most one scan notice per day. It is not guaranteed real time, but you learn without checking the dashboard.

How to do it

  1. One page per object

Then you know whether they scanned the backpack or the laptop. The internal title tells them apart. Free includes one page.

  2. Private when there is nothing to show

On a laptop the notice and the form are usually enough. A public page fits when the text has nothing you mind showing.

  3. Write the notice

Owner, how to write to you, and that the device does not need to be unlocked.

  4. Put the code where it can be seen

Laptop lid, clear of vents. Outer backpack pocket, clear of the ground.

Common questions

The same page for the backpack and the laptop?
You can, but then you cannot tell which one was scanned. One page per object keeps that clear. Free includes one page.
A public page?
It works when the text has nothing you mind showing. For a laptop, private usually fits: the notice and the form are enough.
What if I retire that backpack?
Pause the page. The code stops opening it, and the old label does not show a contact you no longer want.

When you know what the page should say, create it and download the QR.
